A little about saline

Making your own saline solution is quick and easy. Saline is widely used for a variety of things. Saline is literally just salt, and water. Most often you want to use a 0.9% solution. This can easily be made at home. This makes it a very affordable treatment option for many ailments.

A Bag of Redmonds real salt, a jug of distilled water, a mason jar of water, and a tsp of salt on a table.

Ways to use saline

Some of the ways to use saline are nebulizing. Nebulizing saline is considered very safe. It helps thin mucus to make breathing easier. To learn how to nebulize saline just click here. Another way to use saline is as a mouth rinse. You might want to use saline as a mouth rinse if you have mouth ulcers. Or as a gargle for a sore throat. It can also be used as a nasal rinse with a neti pot. These are only a few of saline’s many uses.

What type of water or salt to use

You will want a clean water source. You can use distilled water, but boiled tap water can also be used. Never use regular tap water. For the salt Redmond’s real salt is a great option, but most real salt will work. Some other good options are Pink Himalayan, or Celtic sea salt. I would avoid regular table salt. Regular table salt is often fortified with other things, and is just not the best quality. Make sure your salt is fine grind, coarse grinds might not dissolve and could cause irritation.

How to make saline solution

  • 16 oz glass jar
  • 16 oz purified water
  • 5 grams (1 teaspoon) Redmond’s real salt or other salt of choice

Instructions

Just add 16oz purified water, and 5 grams salt to the glass jar. Shake well until salt is dissolved.

How to store saline solution

Saline made from boiled water should be kept refrigerated no longer then 24 hours. Saline made from distilled water can be refrigerated up to one month. Take out 30 minutes prior to use. If saline becomes cloudy or dirty discard and make a fresh batch.
